Non NHS Services - Private Work Fees
Why GPs sometimes charge fees- surely the doctor is being paid anyway?
It is important to understand that GPs are not employed by the NHS. They are self-employed and they have to cover their costs - staff, buildings, heating, lighting etc, in the same way any small business. The NHS provides payment for NHS work, but not for non-NHS work.
The majority of procedures, consultations and services carried out at this surgery are paid for by the NHS. However, where additional services are provided, we are required to pass on the specific cost to either the patient directly or in some cases the Company requesting the information. The type of additional, non-NHS funded services most frequently requested include:
- insurance forms
- "To Whom It May Concern" letters
- holiday cancellation forms, medical reports
- fitness to travel certificates
- private prescriptions
- some vaccination services
The Government contract with GPs covers medical services to NHS patients, including the provision of on-going medical treatment. In recent years however, more & more organisations have been involving doctors in a whole range of medical work.
Our fees for these services, which are in line with BMA approved national guidelines, are detailed below. Please note that due to the requirements of passport signing our doctors will NOT countersign passport applications. Please refer to the information in your application pack to review who may be able to countersign your form.
